Hong Kong – Looking into eMPF

Looking into eMPF

A. What is “eMPF”?

“eMPF” is a new electronic platform currently involving 4.7 million plan members and 360,000 employers participating in the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme across Hong Kong. It includes 12 trustees and a total of 24 MPF schemes. As members may have more than one account, joining “eMPF” allows employees to access information about all their MPF accounts on a single platform. This includes fund performance, employer contribution records, and the ability to perform various MPF instructions.

B. How to register for an “eMPF” account?

You can register online on the eMPF website or through the eMPF mobile app. Completing the registration involves three simple steps: identity verification, filling out personal information, and setting up a username and password.

To ensure a smooth registration process, please prepare the following items:
– Hong Kong identity card
– Personal mobile phone
– Email address

If you are a “iAM Smart” user, you can directly verify your identity through “Smart Convenience” during registration.

C. Will there be any fees for “eMPF”?

No, there will not be any fees for plan members (ordinary employees) using “eMPF.” The MPF Authority is a non-profit organization and only charges trustees for expenses. According to the law, the fees that trustees charge plan members cannot exceed the fees that the “eMPF” platform charges trustees, which helps reduce administrative costs.

The MPF Authority, expects that after the launch of the eMPF platform, average administrative costs in the first two years could be reduced by 36%, and that within ten years, administrative savings could reach 30 to 40 billion Hong Kong dollars.

D. How to use “eMPF”?

Once you complete your registration on the eMPF platform, your eMPF number will be displayed immediately on the confirmation page. This number allows the eMPF platform to identify you and link all your MPF accounts, including current accounts and any accounts opened in the future.

After successfully registering and activating eMPF, the platform will immediately show the account details under the MPF schemes that have been transferred to it. You can start managing your MPF through the eMPF platform.

View Contribution Records: After selecting an MPF account in the “Account Overview,” you can check your contribution records in the “Contributions” tab of the eMPF mobile app.

Change Investment Portfolio: You can change your investment choices for future contributions through the eMPF mobile app by going to “My MPF” > “Investment” > “Change Future Contribution Investment Portfolio.”

Consolidate Accounts: You can consolidate your personal accounts using the eMPF mobile app. Go to “My MPF” > “Transfer MPF,” then click on “Consolidate Personal Accounts” to merge your personal accounts into one.

Withdraw MPF: You can submit a withdrawal application through the eMPF platform. If you choose to use the eMPF mobile app, log in and select “My MPF” > “Withdraw Benefits.”
