UAE's GDP Grew by an Estimated 3.4% in Q1 2024
The expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport will feature innovation, cutting-edge design, and sustainability at its core.
Project Overview
Commissioned by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), this major project will see Dar Al-Handasah take the lead as the principal consultant for both the master planning and design. Meanwhile, Coop Himmelb (L)AU has been entrusted with the integration of innovative structural designs, advanced technologies and energy-saving concepts to craft a world-class facility.
The updated airport design will focus on incorporating state-of-the-art features in terms of architecture, sustainability, and technology. The project will commence its planning phase in 2024, with the first stage of construction aimed for completion by 2032. Once finished, the airport will span an impressive 70 square kilometers and include 407 Code-E contact gates, five parallel runways, and the capacity to accommodate 260 million passengers annually.
Design Highlights
The airport’s forward-thinking design will feature expansive terminal spaces to create a sense of openness and fluidity. The terminal roof, both functional and symbolic, is envisioned to reflect Dubai’s aspirations and the vision of its leadership, according to Coop Himmelb (L) AU.
A key design aspect focuses on passenger comfort, incorporating modern technologies for passenger assistance, intuitive wayfinding, and natural light utilization. In addition, the advanced technologies with artificial intelligence will enhance efficiency in check-ins and security, improving the overall traveler experience.
Further reflecting Dubai’s cultural heritage, the new airport will not merely be a transport hub but a gateway to a unique global travel experience. As highlighted by Coop Himmelb (L) AU, the design aims to create an inclusive environment that welcomes people from all cultures, fostering connection and unity.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency stands as a core pillar in the airport’s design. Advanced energy-saving measures will be incorporated to reduce environmental impact and optimize operational efficiency. Sustainable engineering, renewable energy, and natural light will be integral to reducing the facility’s carbon footprint
The project was unveiled in April following approval by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the airport expansion represents an investment of $34.8 billion (AED128 billion).
