OpenAI to Combine Multiple Models into Upcoming GPT-5

OpenAI has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating multiple models into one, as GPT-5, which is expected to be released later this summer.

At present, ChatGPT users navigate a range of highly capable models, each designed for specific functions. While these tools are impressive, the similarity in naming can create confusion.

Additionally, OpenAI currently operates two separate model families: the “o” series, which excels in logical reasoning, and the 4o series, known for its multi-modal capabilities.

The release of GPT-5 aims to streamline this approach by merging these parallel advancements into one cohesive model. “We’re not only building a next-generation model,” said Romain Huet, OpenAI’s Head of Developer Experience, “we’re also merging the strengths of our reasoning-driven O-series and the multi-modal capabilities of the GPT-series into a unified system.”

Huet hinted that GPT-5 will deliver a combined experience, drawing on the best features from both model lines. The goal is to eliminate the need for users to switch between models while improving performance across a wide range of tasks.

Jerry Tworek, OpenAI’s Vice President, echoed this sentiment in a Reddit post, describing GPT-5 as a foundational leap forward designed to enhance everything current models do—more efficiently and with fewer limitations.

While a firm release date hasn’t been announced, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has suggested that the launch will take place sometime this summer.
