Statistical Overview: Companies Registry Data for the First Half of 2025
On 18 July 2025, the Hong Kong Companies Registry has reported that a total of 84,293 local companies were newly registered during the first half of 2025. This brings the total number of local companies registered under the Companies Ordinance to an unprecedented 1,494,806 as of June 30, 2025.
In addition, 761 non-Hong Kong companies established a place of business in Hong Kong during this period, resulting in a total of 15,509 registered non-Hong Kong companies, marking another record high.
This surge in company registrations can be attributed to the Hong Kong Government’s proactive policies aimed at facilitating business operations and attracting foreign enterprises and investments. Two significant amendments to the Companies Ordinance were implemented in the first half of 2025, further enhancing the business environment:
- Companies (Amendment) Ordinance 2025: Effective from April 17, 2025, this amendment allows listed companies incorporated in Hong Kong to hold treasury shares and facilitates their disposal. It also promotes paperless corporate communication for both listed and unlisted companies.
- Companies (Amendment) (No. 2) Ordinance 2025: Effective from May 23, 2025, this measure introduces a re-domiciliation regime, providing non-Hong Kong corporations with a streamlined and cost-effective pathway to re-domicile in Hong Kong while maintaining their legal identity and operational continuity.
In the first half of 2025, the Companies Registry received 5,970 registrations for charges on properties of companies, alongside 9,915 notifications of payments and releases. A total of 1,678,809 documents were submitted for registration during this period, and the Registry’s electronic search services recorded 2,615,652 document image searches.
Regarding specialized entities, the number of new Limited Partnership Funds (LPFs) registered in the first half of 2025 was 116, bringing the total to 1,099. For Open-Ended Fund Companies (OFCs), 109 new incorporations were recorded, resulting in a total of 579 OFCs by the end of June 2025.
Additionally, the Registry granted 350 new licenses to trust or company service providers, increasing the total to 6,971. In the licensing of money lenders, 71 new licenses were issued, totaling 2,046 licensed money lenders as of June 30.
