💲 Hong Kong | Updated Statutory Minimum Wage

Starting May 1, 2025, Hong Kong’s Statutory Minimum Wage (SMW) will rise to HK$42.1 per hour, with employers required to keep records of total hours worked for employees earning under HK$17,200 per month. The SMW applies to all employees, whether full-time, part-time, permanent, temporary, or paid by hour, day, or piece, including persons with disabilities, who may undergo a productivity assessment. Exemptions include live-in domestic helpers, interns, and work experience learners. Following the April 30, 2024, approval of the Minimum Wage Commission’s recommendations, the SMW will now be reviewed annually using a formula, with the next adjustment expected on May 1, 2026.

📈 Singapore | Singapore Consumer Price Developments in June 2025

Singapore’s inflation remained subdued in June, with MAS Core Inflation holding at 0.6% year-on-year and dipping 0.1% month-on-month, while headline CPI stayed at 0.8% year-on-year and also eased 0.1% monthly, according to MAS and MTI. Stable core prices reflected higher retail costs offset by declines in other categories, while headline inflation balanced rising transport costs against lower accommodation expenses. The low, steady inflation eases pressure on households and gives policymakers room for flexibility, with forecasters revising 2025 projections down to 0.9% for headline and 0.8% for core inflation, and most expecting further monetary easing amid global uncertainties.

📂 Taiwan | Tax Obligations for Influencers

A new form of online transaction involves four parties: influencers, platforms, advertisers, and viewers, where influencers authorize the use of their content (“performance services”) for ads or paid services. Platforms earn revenue from advertisers or viewers through ads or subscriptions, and influencers meeting certain conditions (e.g., follower thresholds or platform contracts) share in this revenue. To regulate business tax on such transactions, authorities require domestic influencers to register for business tax if they have a fixed business location, a license, staff support, or monthly sales exceeding the threshold. Influencer services are classified as business activities rather than professional or employee services, and business tax is levied separately on platform revenues and influencer profit-sharing.

🧑‍🏭 Vietnam | FDI Attraction Through Processing and Manufacturing

In August 2025, Vietnam’s processing and manufacturing sector attracted $1.6 billion in FDI, led by Luxshare-ICT’s $300 million smartphone project in Bac Ninh and Hailide Fibers’ $200 million capital increase in Tay Ninh, accounting for 76.5% of the nation’s inflows. Cumulatively, the sector has drawn $320.7 billion, or 61.3% of total valid FDI, with $15.3 billion secured in the first eight months of 2025, up 7.7% year-on-year, contributing to Vietnam’s $26.1 billion total FDI, a 27.3% rise. While newly registered capital fell 8.1% to $11 billion amid global volatility, additional investments and share purchases surged 85.9% and 58.8%, underscoring long-term investor confidence. The Foreign Investment Agency highlights Vietnam’s strong appeal but stresses the need to address risks from supply chain disruptions and global tax policies by streamlining licensing, cutting pre-investment costs, and enhancing land access, infrastructure, housing, visas, and workforce training to sustain competitiveness.

📨 Malaysia | E-Invoice Implementation in Malaysia (Issue 1 of 2)

In Malaysia, e-invoicing requirements tied to revenue thresholds must be closely monitored by new businesses starting between 2023 and 2025. Businesses exceeding RM500,000 in annual revenue during YA2023, YA2024, or YA2025 are required to implement e-invoicing from 1 July 2026, even if they only cross the threshold in YA2025 (e.g., Layang Warna Sdn Bhd, incorporated in 2023, exceeded RM500,000 in YA2024 and must adopt e-invoicing in 2026). Conversely, businesses recording annual revenue below RM500,000 within these years, such as sole proprietorship Pak Salleh in YA2025, remain exempt provided they continue to meet the criteria. Stay tuned for our upcoming newsletter for more insights on e-invoicing.
