Singapore and South Korea Strengthen Ties with New Strategic Partnership
Singapore and South Korea have launched a new strategic partnership aimed at deepening cooperation across trade, sustainability, technology and defence. The partnership was announced on Nov 1 during Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s first official visit to Seoul, where he met South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. The upgrade marks a significant milestone as both countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.
The new partnership features eight key agreements. Among them is a plan to establish a green and digital shipping corridor, supporting zero or near-zero emission fuels and digital innovation in the maritime sector. Both countries will also work together on next-generation energy solutions, including ammonia, hydrogen and civil nuclear technologies. These efforts are expected to advance each nation’s green agenda and serve as a model for regional collaboration.
Beyond energy, the partnership expands cooperation in public sector innovation, cyber security and artificial intelligence. PM Wong highlighted joint work on AI safety and governance to build public trust and ensure responsible development. Cultural ties will also grow, with both countries facilitating more collaboration in arts, culture and sports.
Economic links are set to deepen as well. Trade and investment flows have grown significantly since the Korea-Singapore Free Trade Agreement came into force in 2006, and both countries are now among each other’s top 10 trading partners. Singapore also welcomed South Korea’s participation in the Digital Economic Partnership Agreement, which enhances digital trade across borders. Looking ahead, Singapore expects negotiations to upgrade the Asean-Korea Free Trade Area to begin in early 2026.
Notably, Singapore will, for the first time, allow imports of beef and pork from Jeju. The two countries will also launch a joint project to support Asean’s digital transformation. President Lee expressed confidence in the partnership, noting South Korea’s support for Singapore’s upcoming Asean and Apec chairmanships.
PM Wong said the strengthened ties reflect a shared commitment to navigating global uncertainty together. By combining South Korea’s strengths in energy, AI and semiconductors with Singapore’s extensive networks, both countries aim to expand opportunities for businesses, workers and cultural exchange.
