However, entering Vietnam for meetings or preliminary business activities is different from taking up employment in the country.

Foreign nationals planning to work in Vietnam must identify the correct immigration status and determine whether they need a work permit, a work-permit exemption and an LD1 or LD2 visa. Employers should also confirm the employee’s eligibility before collecting and legalising overseas documents.

What Is a Vietnam Work Visas

A Vietnam work visa is an immigration document that permits an eligible foreign national to enter and remain in Vietnam for employment. Most applicants must first obtain a valid work permit or establish that they qualify for a work-permit exemption before securing the appropriate employment visa.

Vietnam generally uses the following visa classifications for foreign workers:

LD1 visa: For a foreign national working in Vietnam who has confirmation that they are exempt from the work-permit requirement, unless an applicable international treaty provides otherwise.

LD2 visa: For a foreign national who is required to hold a Vietnam work permit.

A DN1 or DN2 business visa is intended for qualifying business-related visits or commercial activities. It should also check whether an exemption may apply.

Step 2: Collect and Legalise the Documents

Collect the passport, health certificate, criminal-record document, photographs, evidence of qualifications and experience, and documents supporting the employment or assignment.

Documents originating overseas should be legalised, translated and certified where required.
